Pussy Bow Blouse

Hello everyone! I’m back again with another Simple Sew make. This time I’d thought I’d try something different with the Pussy Bow Blouse (and dress!). I originally got this pattern as a freebie pattern from Love Sewing Magazine but if you missed out it’s now available on the Simple Sew website.

I was very kindly gifted some rather cool fabric for this make. I got this lovely (and very bright!) John Kaldor crepe from Sew Essential. It’s in the sale for a bargainous £6 per metre so be quick! This was the first time I’ve ever sewn with crepe and I was expecting some difficulties with it being very drapey and shifty! I needn’t have worried though – it sewed and pressed perfectly. I will definitely be sewing with this type of fabric again!

Claire has made a YouTube tutorial to accompany this pattern here. I pretty much followed this tutorial myself!

I cut out a size 14 and didn’t alter the pattern at all and I’m really happy with the fit. It is a fitted blouse and has two double pointed darts on the front and two more on the back. If you’re not sure how to sew up one of these darts, Gabby shows you how to do it here. Because the blouse is fitted, there is an invisible zip in the side seam to help get it on and off.

The only thing I did differently to the tutorial was to add the cuffs on to the sleeve after the sleeve was made up, as opposed to adding them whilst the sleeve was flat. I just prefer not to have a seam on show on the cuff. I slip stitched the cuffs in place by hand. I also hand stitched the tie to the back neckline for a neat finish.

I thought this blouse looks good paired with my me-made leather pencil skirt. To me, this blouse just had to be paired with black bottom halves! Considering that when I was younger the only colour I would wear was black. I’m now finding it hard to pair this blouse with black bottoms as I don’t seem to have any! That’s sewing for you. Black fabric is too boring to sew with! I really must make some black basics.

I quite like the blouse paired with my RTW wide-legged trousers too (Simple Sew Palazzo trousers?). I may wear this combination to work. I’m not sure I can get away with leather though!

I know, I need practice at tying that tie! I couldn’t get the ‘bow’ to look right for the photos I’m afraid. But the close up does show this lovely fabric.

So all in all, I’m really pleased with my new blouse. It’s really smart and will be ideal for work!
