Fayeraysews’ Lily dress

admin Doughtys Fabric, Pattern Review 1 Comment

Say “hello” to the lovely Lily! This is definitely one of my favourite Simple Sew makes – the pattern and fabric combo is exactly what I had in mind.

I made the collarless version (view A) with short sleeves in a size 8, with only minor adjustments. I lengthened the bodice by 2” (5 cm), and widened the shoulders by 0.25” (0.6 cm). I have only recently realised that I have slightly broad shoulders, so this minor adjustment made all the difference with range of arm movement. I didn’t change the sleeve pattern piece itself as there was enough ease at the sleeve head to accommodate my adjustment.

The fabric I chose was this gorgeous Lady McElroy Cobra Corsage print tana lawn from Doughtys, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that I think this is my favourite fabric EVER. The print is swoon-worthy and the quality of the fabric is wonderful. The dress features a side seam zip, so the pattern isn’t interrupted on the back, meaning less time and fabric used pattern matching.

I find the faux wrap neckline of this dress very flattering and different to other wrap dress patterns I have seen. The overall feel of the dress is slightly oriental, and I think the fabric matches the pattern perfectly, but with an interesting edge.

The skirt portion was hemmed at 3 cm, as indicated on the pattern, and the skirt hits me at the knee. I usually have to lengthen dresses, so this may be worth bearing in mind if you are shorter than me (I’m 5’ 11”, for reference).

I think you could very easily change the feel of this dress depending upon the fabric choice, with fun printed cottons or linen for a day look, and crepe or viscose for an evening look.

See you next time!
