Lizzie B’s Bella Dress

admin Pattern Review 1 Comment

Hi everyone!

I am so excited to be writing my first blog post for Simple Sew! I chose the Bella Dress as my first pattern, and I am delighted to report that I am really pleased with the result.

The Bella Dress has a funnel neck, bell shaped sleeves, a body skimming shape that goes in slightly at the waist, and it gives me serious 60s vibes.

I chose to make mine in some beautiful Ponti de Roma Jersey fabric from Sew Over It in ‘Turkish Bath Blue’. It’s a jacquard knit and such a lovely texture.

I made a few adjustments to the pattern such as shortening it by 3 inches. The full length of the pattern is very elegant but a mini length to wear with tights is more my personal style and I really like the result.

I also used a chunkier hem than the instructions suggested as it suited the weight of my fabric and fit well with the shape of the bottom of the skirt.

Lastly, I ditched the invisible zip because my fabric is more than stretchy enough to slip on over my head. No sewing with fiddly zips – result!

I considered redrafting the sleeves to create an ordinary, full-length straight sleeve because I’m always cold and I didn’t like the idea of bare wrists. However, I did go for the bell sleeves in the end and I think they are brilliant – such a simple way to create style in a garment! And for those of you who share my fear of cold wrists – I’ve been wearing it with a white, long-sleeved cotton top underneath and it looks great!

The funnel neck is quite large which makes it super snuggly. I attached it to the bodice on just one edge of the funnel and hemmed the other edge, as I believe this is what the instructions told me to do. This means that I have one long funnel of fabric that I fold over to create the nice funnel effect. Next time I think I will attach the funnel to the bodice on two edges, so that the funnel is permanently in the ‘folded over position’. This is because my fabric is plain blue on the wrong side and if the funnel moves around it sometimes flashes the wrong side of the fabric – lesson learnt for next time!

Overall, I am really happy with my first Simple Sew make, and I will definitely be getting a lot of wear out of it. The body skimming shape in lovely stretchy ponti is just so comfy!! Thanks for reading guys – see you next time!

  1. It looks super Lizzie. Love the choice of material and colour. Could I ask you- how long did it take you to make and the total cost.
